For no apparent reason certain combinations of camera bodies and lenses have a magical element when combined. When I first started getting serious about photography my favourite combo was the Olympus OM1 body with the Zuiko 100mm f2.8 lens. There was a certain quality to the pictures that I made with this outfit (usually shooting wide open) that made me smile and that made it into my earliest portfolio. There have been many other pairings that have had the same effect on me and my work over the years and, as a quick jaunt down memory lane, here are a few of them:

Year(s) Body Lens Why
1982-1986 Olympus OM1 Zuiko 100mm f2.8 sharp, compact, wonderful wide-open and easy to focus
1987-1988 Leica M6 50mm f2 Summicron the only "standard lens" I ever loved and you could shoot into the light
1989-1992 Nikon F3P 24mm f2 Nikkor the first wide angle that I got on with and shallow depth of field on a wide was a revelation
1989-1992 Nikon F3P 105mm f1.8 Nikkor almost as lovely as the 100 Olympus lens to use and even sharper
1994-1998 Canon EOS1n 70-200 f2.8L Canon the zoom lens that broke the mould and I'm still in love with the IS version
2003-2008 Canon EOS1D mkII 16-35 f2.8L Canon sweet pairing that could do anything - just shone with the 1.3x crop cameras
2008-2009 Canon EOS5D mkII 135mm f2 Canon wow, just wow... and I don't even own the latest version

And that almost brings us up to date. There is however a new contender on the block - a body and lens combination that were never designed to be good together but every time I've used them together there seems to be a creative charge runs through me and my gear. It's a feeling so strong that it made me think about this list and put it together - who knows it may even get others thinking about kit that has made them make better pictures without trying.

The new combo on the block is... Canon EOS7D + Canon 85mm f1.8

Now there is a similarity here between the Olympus OM1 + 100mm, Nikon F3P + 105mm, Canon EOS5D MkII + 135mm and the new magic combo that cannot be ignored. The angles of view are not dissimilar and they all seem to have come into my career at a time when I am trying to do new and interesting things. It could be as simple as the fact that my very first SLR only had one lens - a 135mm f2.8 Hanimex lens with an M42 screw fit on a Zenit B and my deep psyche wants me to go back to my roots!

I'm sure that there is a good reason why but I have to tell you that as soon as I look through the viewfinder with the 7D and my 85mm lens I feel that the world is a wonderful place and that my career is on an upward track!
