Clients ask me a lot of questions when we first discuss working together. Some of them are not used to commissioning photography and, to paraphrase a US politician "don't know what they don't know". I see it as my job to help them ask the right questions and establish a strong and trusting business relationship. Here are a few of the frequently asked questions that I have had. If you have others then please call or email me.

Q   What areas of photography do you specialise in?
A
My background is firmly rooted in editorial - both newspapers and magazines but these days I am just as happy shooting for commercial and PR clients.

Q
Why is your website called dg28.com and not neilturnerphotography?
A
There is a story to that and I have written about it on my blog. It all came about when I needed a domain name for my photo-education site back in 2000 and I was chatting with some students to whom I had just given a lecture. It's a long story, so go here to read about it.

Q   How much do you charge for photography?
A
I don't have any standard charges. Different types of work attract different fees, which are based on the end usage. I will always have an in-depth discussion with new clients to work out what they need and then tailor my services to best serve those needs. You can guarantee that my pricing will always be competitive.

Q
What about copyright?
A
Like the vast majority of professional photographers, I will grant you a license to use the photographs. The extent of the license is part of the calculation when costing work. I grant licenses for a single use if that is all a client needs or I can grant an unrestricted, worldwide license if that suits the clients requirements.

Q
How does the commissioning process work?
A
It is much like any other ordering and sales process. You contact me and we talk through your needs, we agree on what you would like and then I give you a price. Sometimes there are further adjustments required to the specification of the job or the price but then I will send you a confirmation of the commission and I will shoot the pictures. The images are delivered to the agreed specification on disc, via email or they can be placed on a web server. Once everything is OK, I'll send you an invoice. That isn't the end. I will continue to store back up copies of your images free of charge which will, I hope, be the start of a long and happy client/photographer relationship.

Q   What photographic services do you offer?
A
The only services that I offer myself are photography and the post production of my own images. If you need exhibition prints, brochures or any other service related to what I do I will be happy to reccommend specialists in those fields.

Q
And other services?
A
I lecture about the kind of work that I do to a variety of audiences and I talk to PR companies and those unfamiliar with commissiong pictures about how to work with professional photographers. I am available for consultancy about photographic matters and I can provide training for commercial companies or trade bodies on the digital process.

Q   Are you insured?
A
I have £2million worth of public liabilities insurance and I will take out professional indemnity insurance for specific jobs when required. My vehicle and cameras are fully insured for business use and I take care of my clients' digital images by backing them up on three seperate systems in two different locations.

Q   How far will you travel for a client?
A
I have worked all over the world and I love interesting and challenging commissions. My service is bespoke and so I will happily talk about travel with you.

If you have any further questions, or want to talk about costs or any other part of the commissioning process, please email me at neil@dg28.com or call me on 07774 698947.
