I would be the first to say that it's not the camera that takes the picture, but the photographer behind it. That having been said, having the right gear allows you to make and deliver good pictures more easily.

Gone are the days when a couple of cameras, three fixed lenses and a Metz in a fishing bag with a dozen rolls of Tri-x represented a complete outfit for a working news photographer. The arrivals of colour pages and portable transmission kits heralded a big increase in the amount of kit we were expected to carry and meant that there was no real alternative to driving everywhere. Picture editors now demand well lit and properly captioned images, and they want them quickly. I will admit to being an equipment junky.

Sometimes I curse the weight of my camera bag, but there isn't anything in it that I could easily do without. The camera bag page gives a list of what it contains and has a brief appraisal of some of the key items Central to the way that I like to work is my lighting kit. It has to be very portable, extremely versatile and 100% reliable. The lighting kit page tells you what I use, why I use it and has a brief appraisal of some items.
No photographer's kit is complete without at least one computer and a large bundle of software. I use a laptop for 60% of my work and a Mac Mini with a beautifully calibrated Eizo monitor for the rest. I handle thousands of images a week. The other stuff page tells you more. Every once in a while I get bored with the gear that I'm using and try something new. This section will grow into something of a diary of those experiments.
